Our '80s Crush Took Home a Golden Globe: 5 Other Movies Where Christian Slater Stole Our Hearts

It’s a win four decades in the making. On Sunday, Christian Slater took home his first Golden Globe, winning best supporting actor in a series or TV movie for his role as the title character in Mr. Robot.

But Slater, 46, won our hearts long before this win. For years, the star has played the bad boy that we can’t help swooning over. This is a man that had us almost convinced that homicide was acceptable because, "The extreme always seems to make an impression."

While the Slater films listed below didn’t earn him any shiny hunks of prestige, they did inspire us to scribble “Mrs. Christian Slater” in our notebooks and daydream about riding on the back of his motorcycle. (He has to have a motorcycle, right?)

Heathers

Unless you are on a brain tumor-heavy breakfast diet, you have seen some part of the ’80s cult classic Heathers. Slater’s portrayal of Westerburg High School’s dangerous yet alluring black sheep J.D., gave us a bad boy with a serious smirk and an even more intense rap sheet. While Veronica made the right choice, Slater’s J.D. left an impression we are still feeling now.

Pump Up the Volume

Slater’s next big character, Mark “Hard Harry” Hunter, had the radical J.D. beliefs, but channeled them into a pirate radio show. This was also a pirate radio show where he often ranted shirtless, a major plot point to teenage Kelli Bender. And if you’re a fan of the actor’s unique vocal snarl this is a great opportunity to hear it … a lot.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

He’s wearing a shirt in this one, but Slater is also equipped with a bow and arrow and an attractive altruistic urge to help the unfortunate. What this film lacks in smirks, it makes up for in bullseyes and long, luxurious locks.

Ferngully

Yes, it’s a cartoon. A cartoon where Slater plays Pip, a built, daring redhead who can fly and who also has no need for anything but bottoms. Never have yellow leaves looked so good.

Interview with a Vampire

Acting up against Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, Slater still manages to enchant as the less pale, lace-less, wig-less reporter Daniel Malloy. This is the reason I got into journalism. Still haven’t met a vampire yet, but I have gone to two dog weddings … so thanks Slater.
